Expressive Arts and Design

"Our task, regarding creativity, is to help children climb their own mountains, as high as possible. No one can do more”

- Loris Malaguzzi

The development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity.

At Horsted Keynes Preschool we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Expressive arts and design is about the following at Horsted Keynes preschool:

  • Providing a rich creative environment where all children’s interests are fostered and encouraged

  • Providing opportunities for children to explore their ideas through making, drawing, design, dance, and music

  • Working with parents to understand their children’s creative development and the importance of it being child lead

  • Enabling the children to express their ideas and feelings and to promote the development of the imagination

  • Providing a stimulating environment and to value originality, creativity, and expressiveness

  • Providing a wide range of activities that children can respond to by using their senses, developing ideas, and expressing those ideas in a wide variety of ways

  • Using resources from a variety of cultures to stimulate different ways of thinking

  • Accommodating children's cultural or religious beliefs relating to forms of art or methods of representation

  • Providing children with sensory impairment with opportunities to experience and respond to different stimuli (e.g., sounds, objects) in a variety of ways
