Mathematics Development

“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding”

-William Paul Thurston

Developing a strong grounding in number is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically.

At Horsted Keynes Preschool we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Mathematical development is about the following at Horsted Keynes preschool:

  • Recognising that Mathematics is everywhere

  • Learning Mathematical concepts through play

  • Fostering enthusiasm, confidence, and the development of knowledge in exploring, using, and applying a broad range of mathematical concepts

  • Developing children's ability to recognise numbers

  • Developing children's ability in counting through meaningful and relevant experiences

  • Fostering an interest in solving simple calculations, such as subtraction and addition

  • Developing children's ability to recognise and know some properties of two dimensional and three dimensional shapes
